======================================================================
Compared to the last report, demand for all types of hay in Idaho is moderate.
New crop hay is starting to sell and prices are higher than they were
this time last year.
Alfalfa hay in Idaho is having greater demand than in the past with other
surrounding states not having their normal hay crop this year.
People are still worried about a drought in most areas around Idaho with
the water supply being low.
Ranchers are buying most of the hay that's being traded right now with
fear they will need it with this drought we are having out West.
Dairy's seem to be holding off buying hay if they can to see what the
prices do, some dairy's need hay and are buying smaller lots at the higher
prices just trying to get by.
Most farmers around the state say they are having multiple offers on
their hay as demand has grown and people are trying to contract future
cuttings.
Some dryland hay producers in south and east Idaho are worried they aren't
going to get a single crop due to it being dry and others are cutting
what little they have just to get a few bales out of it.
Dryland Timothy in Northern Idaho is better off than the dryland down south.
Some producers are late cutting due to the frost damage from this spring
and others are cutting even though its shorter and not as good quality.
Most of East Idaho is worried they wont get two crops this year due to
lack of water.
The hay yields around the whole state are going to be short this year
with most of the state having some form of frost damage and with water
shortages.
Farmers that rely on mountain water runoff have already had water shut
off or are going to have the water shut off soon.
Farmers that pump water from wells are a little better off but they will
also be short water this year in some areas.
According to the U.S.
Drought Monitor Website, most of the state is under moderate drought
to severe drought with patches of extreme drought spread out from East
Idaho to Southern Idaho.
Exceptional drought is showing up in southwest Idaho and spreading towards
across the south end of the state towards the southeast corner.
Most of the big hay producing areas in Idaho are under extreme to exceptional
drought.
